Advanced Academics Teacher Spotlight
Mrs. Loretta Latus received her Bachelor of Science degree from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas in 2001 – with a Reading Specialization, and a Spanish Minor. She received her Masters of Education in Curriculum and Instruction in 2009 from Texas A&M University, Commerce.
Latus was a member of the United States Air Force, serving as a Personnel Specialist stationed at High Wycombe, England from 1987-1990. She worked as a paralegal secretary before returning to university to earn her teaching certification.
She started her teaching career in Lockhart, Texas, teaching 6th grade Reading for three years, and Science for one year at Lockhart Jr. High School. Since being at WMS, she has taught 7th grade ELAR (Academic & Pre-AP/GT) for five years before being asked to teach 8th grade ELAR (Academic & Pre-AP) for the past three years.
She has also been involved in coaching extracurricular activities such as: Cheerleading sponsor, Student Council sponsor, Spelling & Maps, Charts, & Graphs sponsor, teacher leader for Observation Protocol, mentor, and AVID teacher.
Latus received the honor of being selected Teacher of the Year in 2006. She has also been selected as ‘Most Inspirational Teacher’ for 7th and 8th grade numerous times, and can no longer be voted for in this capacity! Latus has also been asked to teach professional development for the district and at national conferences as a part of the ‘Working on the Work’ framework for lesson implementation.
Mrs. Latus’ husband is also a teacher at WMS; he teaches 8th grade Algebra and coaches 8th girls’ volleyball and basketball. They have two children who attended and graduated from RHS in 2009 and 2011. Jordan-22, works at Parkland Hospital as a Resource Management Specialist, and Connor-20, is a sophomore at Texas State University, and also works at the Nike Factory Outlet.
“I am proud to be part of the RISD family, and even luckier to have to opportunity to work at WMS for Mr. Pringle. I have amazing colleagues and fantastic students who help me stay focused and goal-oriented. I am a life-long learner and am looking forward to begin work on my Master’s in Leadership starting this summer through Lamar University.”

Advanced Placement and Pre-Advanced Placement
The Advanced Placement program is a nationally recognized program administered by College Board through which students may receive college credit.
The Pre-Advanced Placement program is a collection of courses designed to develop the knowledge, concepts, and skills necessary in Advanced Placement courses.
