RHS Academic Decathlon Places First in State, Headed to Nationals

RHS Academic Decathlon 2012 State Champions

Rockwall High School’s Academic Decathlon team defended its 2010-2011 State Championship title at the State competition this weekend in San Antonio.  The team finished first in State, and won the Silver medal in the Superquiz relay and the Silver medal in the Superquiz team competition.  The team has been named state champions for the past three years in a row.

The team is the highest scoring team in the state regardless of school size and as a result will represent the state of Texas at the United States Academic Decathlon Finals in Albuquerque, New Mexico, April 26 – 28.  This marks the school’s first appearance at the finals and only the second time that a 4A school will represent Texas.

Team members won a total of 28 medals and brought home  $20,050 in scholarship money.  Rockwall High School decathletes received the following awards:

  • Jacob Cariker – Silver in Economics, Silver in Language and Literature, Bronze in Mathematics, Silver in Music, and Fifth overall honors decathlete in the state.  Jacob won $1950 in scholarship money.
  • Zachary Dennis – Zach won $1200 in scholarship money.
  • Julia Juarez –  Julia won $1200 in scholarship money.
  • Eugene Kim – Gold in Art, Gold in Super Quiz, Gold in Music, Bronze in Science, and First overall honors decathlete in the state.  Eugene won $4700 in scholarship money.
  • Schyler Hohenberger – Bronze in Art, Bronze in Economics, and Third overall Varsity decathlete in the state.  Schyler won $2700 in scholarship money.
  • Ginny Mitchell – Gold in Art, Bronze in Economics, Bronze in Super Quiz, Gold in Language and Literature, Silver in Mathematics, Gold inMusic, Bronze in Speech, and First overall Scholastic decathlete in the state.  Ginny won $4700 in scholarship money.
  • Andrea Pujol-  Gold in Interview and Silver in Music.  Andrea won $1200 in scholarship money.
  • Sarah Walters – Silver in Super Quiz and Bronze in Science.  Sarah won $1200 in scholarship money.
  • Chance Witherspoon – Bronze in Interview, Gold in Mathematics, and Bronze in Science.  Chance won $1200 in scholarship money.

The team is coached by David Gear and Michael Oldham. Coach David Gear was named the Texas Academic Decathlon Medium School Coach of the Year.
