Rockwall High School Senior Michael Bonfante was honored at the campus on March 20, 2015 with a check for $500 from the American Society of Marine Artists and the Rockwall Art League. Michael’s handpainted stoneware sculpture “Tropical Fish” won Honorable Mention in the second annual Young Marine Artists Search in 2014.
Of 34 entries, Michael was the only winner from Texas. Michael paints in a variety of media, sculpts in clay, and produces 3D work using cut & formed sheets of wood. He is the President of the RHS National Art Honor Society. He was selected as a member of the Nasher Sculpture Center’s Student Advisory Board.
In 2014 he was selected for the Marie Sharpe Walsh Foundation Summer Seminar, an intensive residential institute for gifted art students held on the campus of Colorado College. Michael is currently enrolled in the AP 2D art class of Anne Foster, whom he recognizes for her contribution to his growth as an artist. He intends to enter two art pieces in the Young Marine Artists Search this year. The Young Marine Artists Search is held each year by the American Society of Marine Artists, and is open to artists aged 16 to 22. The 2015 entry deadline is July 1. The Rockwall Art League is cooperating with the American Society of Marine Artists to promote the Young Marine Artists Search in the North Texas Region.
