This year, Jones made the commitment to participate in Hour of Code. This is a one hour lesson designed to show that anybody can learn the basics of coding a computer program. Students are using hourofcode.com to complete challenges. These challenges range from simple for the younger students, such as clicking on correct images. To more difficult for the older learners, such as making a character on the screen turn in a certain degrees and then move a certain distance.
The library is also participating by helping the students understand code without the use of a computer. Students are given 6 cups, paper, and a pencil. Then, they become programmers who choose commands from a master list and write a program that a “computer” (a different student) can follow step by step to create patterns and pyramids with the cups. Jones students are becoming future ready!
