Eight Rockwall-Heath High School students competed in twelve events in Area 1, Region 3 Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition held at Rockwall High School on Saturday, January 23, 2016. Of approximately four hundred students from twenty-five high schools, all eight RHHS students qualified for the BPA state competition as primary or alternate representatives for Texas BPA Region 1.
Three RHHS students won gold medals in individual events: Julen Zurutuza won Java programming, Jose Molina won C++ Programming, and Nicholas Fullington won Computer Security. Savannah Thompson earned a silver medal in Interview Skills, and Dillan Lincoln won bronze in Personal Computer Servicing and Troubleshooting. All these students also qualified for and will compete in the Texas State BPA competition to be held in Corpus Christi from March 2nd through March 5th, 2016.
In team events, Savannah Thompson and Madilyn Maldonado won a bronze medal in Broadcast News Productions, and they are the state alternate team for that event. Other state alternate qualifiers based on their results include Brendan Brook and Jose Molina for Video Production Team (4th place), Bryce Baxter for Prepared Speech (5thplace), Madilyn Maldonado for Digital Publishing Pilot (5th place), Brendan Brooke for Fundamental Word Processing (6th place).
In the Open Division, Nicholas Fullington earned a gold medal in Information Technology and a bronze medal in Programming. Julen Zurutuza earned a gold medal in Programming and 4th place in Information Technology. All students can compete in the ‘open’ division contests. At the state competition, any student is eligible to compete in any Open Division.
