  • School’s Namesake
    Dorris Albion Jones was born September 4, 1906 in Rockwall County, Texas to James Jones and Mary Mott Jones. He attended public school in Rowlett, Texas  and Rockwall, Texas. Mr. Jones attended Prairie View A & M College, Texas Southern University, Bishop College, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in  administration. He earned a Master of Science degree, Magna Cum Laude, at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas. He was a member of Alpha Kappa Mu honorary society and the Phi Beta Sigma social fraternity. Mr. Jones was awarded scholarships from the Science Foundation with an emphasis in chemistry and physics. The scholarship honors included studies at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland, studies in oceanography  in Galveston, Texas, and studies and a job offer at the National Aeronautics Space Administration (NASA) in Houston, Texas.

     

    In an educational career that spanned fifty years, Mr. Jones held teaching and administrative positions in Fate and Rockwall, Texas. He was a principal for seventeen years at the Bourn Avenue High School and later taught physics in the integrated school system at Rockwall High School.

     

    Mr. Jones served in the U.S. Army during World War II at Camp Lee, Virginia, as a teacher technician in the Quarter Master School. He was also a 33 degree Mason, a member of the New Caledonia Baptist Church in Rockwall, Texas and a devoted husband for fifty-three years to Mrs. Charles Etta Warren Jones.
