John Mays is beginning his fourteenth year of teaching and first year as Director of Bands at Rockwall High School. Prior to his Rockwall appointment, Mr. Mays taught at Clark High School in Plano ISD, Parkhill Jr. High in Richardson ISD, and Wells Middle School in Spring ISD.
During his tenure at Clark High School, the Wind Ensemble received consistent Sweepstakes Awards in University Interscholastic League competition for Superior Ratings in Marching, Concert Performance and Sight Reading. The Clark Wind Ensemble was awarded “Best in Class” or “Best in Contest” in every festival in which they performed. In 2013, the Clark Wind Ensemble was named National Winner in the National Wind Band Competition in both the 4A division and New Music Division.
Mr. Mays has been recognized as an Honorary Member for the Congressional Youth Leadership Council as well as being honored by the Clark High School PTA with the Life Membership Award. In 2013, Mr. Mays was nominated for Teacher of the Year.
Mr. Mays holds professional affiliations with the Texas Music Educators Association, Texas Bandmaster Association, Texas Music Adjudicators Association and Kappa Kappa Psi Honorary Band Fraternity. Mr. Mays maintains an active schedule as a clinician and adjudicator throughout the state. He holds a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Texas Tech University.
Michael Jones is an Associate Director of Bands at Rockwall High School since 2001; conducting the Honors band and teaching concert band, is the symphonic 1 ensemble director and the director of the jazz ensemble. Mr. Jones has earned his first sweepstakes with the RHS Honors band. He has since earned several UIL sweepstakes awards with the RHS Symphonic 1 ensemble and the Jazz Ensemble. Under Mr. Jones’ instruction the RHS jazz ensemble has earned most outstanding band awards at multiple jazz festivals.
Mr. Jones graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce where he studied saxophone with Roy Allen Jr. and conducting with Bobby Francis and Dr. Jeff Emge. He was selected as the most outstanding senior during his final year at TAMU-C. While a member of the TAMU-C wind ensemble and jazz orchestra, Mr. Jones has performed on the famous Carnegie Hall stage in New York City and as a soloist and ensemble performer at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
Mr. Jones is an active performer in and around Dallas. He has performed most recently with Dallas’ Original Jazz Orchestra and the Brookhaven Jazz Orchestra. Mr. Jones is a member of Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Jazz Educators Association, Kappa Kappa Psi, and Mu Phi Epsilon. Mr. Jones is married to Sunny and they have one son, Duncan. They live in Royse City.
Kara Wallace is an Assistant Band Director at Rockwall High School in Rockwall, Texas. At Rockwall High School Kara has had the opportunity to conduct the varsity and non-varsity concert bands, also directing the Rockwall High School Orange Wave Marching Band, and has previously served as the Color Guard Director. She also team teaches at William Middle School and Utley Middle School, as well as the feeding elementary schools. Mrs. Wallace has had the privilege to conduct the Rockwall Community Band for a season in 2009, as well as perform with them in previous seasons. Mrs. Wallace received her Bachelors of Music Education from Texas A&M University – Commerce in 2004. Mrs. Wallace is an active member of the Dallas Wind Symphony Education Committee, and is also affiliated with Kappa Kappa Psi and Mu Phi Epsilon.
Mrs. Wallace lives in Fate, Texas with her family, husband Jason Wallace and beautiful children Eric, Claire and Grace. Jason Wallace is the Director of Bands at Cain Middle School in Rockwall ISD and is a professional tuba player in ensembles such as the Dallas Wind Symphony and the Lewisville Symphony Orchestra.
Brian Miers is an Assistant Band Director at Rockwall High School. In August of 2001, Mr. Miears began conducting the Symphonic Band and co-conducting the Honors Band. In September of 2004, Mr. Miears was called to active duty with the 36th Infantry Division Texas National Guard to Iraq. Mr. Miears returned from active duty in January of 2006 and spent the spring at the newly opened Rockwall Heath High School conducting the Concert Band. He tranferred back to Rockwall High School in August of 2006 where he currently conducts the Concert Band and Jazz Band. In his tenure at Rockwall High School, Mr. Miears has built the band website, planned and coordinated band trips, formulated and implemented a system for teaching fundamentals, helped the band earn several UIL sweepstakes, and helped many students achieve highest honors at Texas State Solo / Ensemble and TMEA All-State.
Before teaching in Rockwall, Mr. Miears graduated from Texas A&M University-Commerce where he studied trumpet with Conrad Bouchka and Dr. James Sims, and studied conducting with Bobby Francis and Dr. Jeff Emge. While a member of the TAMU-C Symphonic Band, Mr. Miears performed at the Meyerson Symphony Center in Dallas.
Mr. Miears was in the Texas National Guard from 1996 until 2006. IIn 2004, Mr. Miears was attached to the 18th Airborne Division and deployed to Iraq for Operation Iraqi Freedom III where he served with an elite team of soldiers protecting allied personnel from all over the world.
Mr. Miears is an active musician in and around Dallas. He currently leads worship at LakePointe Church Forney. He is a member of Texas Music Educator’s Association, Texas Jazz Educator’s Association, National Worship Leader’s Conference, and Austin Classical Guitar Society. Mr. Miears and his wife, Amy, live in Royse City with their daughters Anna and Alyssa.

I’m very proud to tell you that the RHS Jazz Bands out-performed all other schools in our region. We placed 7 students in the advanced region jazz band with an audition for the all-state band. Three students earned places in the band without taping for state. Our jazz band really sets a high standard for jazz education in our region and across the state.
