Discipline Complaints & Appeals

  • The goal of student discipline is to collaboratively work with the student, parents, and school staff to determine the root causes of unacceptable behavior, academics, or attendance, and to devise a plan to change the behavior to help the student become successful.  Rockwall ISD follows a cycle of student success intervention process that involves teachers, administrators, parents, and other resources reasonably calculated to prevent recurrence of misconduct and misbehavior.

    Campus-Level Appeals
All campus-level discipline decisions may be appealed directly to the principal and no further. Request for an appeal by parents to the principal must be made in writing within 5 days of the decision. Decisions of the principal are final and cannot be appealed further.

    Alternative Placement Appeals
All Level 1 appeals regarding placement at the discipline alternative education program (DAEP) require a hearing with the principal, before being appealed, secondly, to the Central Administration Intervention Team.  If an additional appeal is desired, a Level 3 is then appealed through Student Services. Request for an appeal by parents must be made in writing within 5 days of the decision at each level. Level 3 decisions are final and cannot be appealed further.

    Expulsion Complaints/Grievances
Complaints regarding expulsions must be made by parents on the Level 1 form directly to the principal, within 15 days of the decision.  After receipt of the principal’s decision, the parents have 10 days to grieve to the Executive Director of Student Services, using the district form for a Level 2 Appeal. The process for Complaints & Grievances follows Board policy FNG(LOCAL).
