Superintendent of Schools

During an era of student growth, Dr. John Villarreal is an experienced and proven Superintendent, steering Rockwall Independent School District's 23 campuses, 18,600 students, and over 2,000 teachers and staff with dedication and leadership. With a career spanning 32 years in public education, Dr. Villarreal's professional journey from a teacher, coach, counselor, principal at the elementary and high school levels, assistant superintendent and now superintendent has prepared him for the challenges of leading Rockwall ISD to new heights.

Under his leadership, the District has achieved accomplishments that have significantly impacted students, teachers, and staff. Notable among these achievements is the successful approval of the 2021 bond, a testament to the community's belief in its schools. This bond has supported the construction of four new buildings, including two 9th-grade campuses opening in Fall 2024, a new Rochell Elementary Fall 2024, a new middle school, and three middle school expansions in Fall 2025 to accommodate adding sixth-graders.

Academically, the District has strong partnerships with Collin College, exemplified by the substantial increase of 369% in Dual Credit student enrollment since 2016. Moreover, students have earned an impressive 330 professional career and technical certifications in 2023, equipping them with skills for future success. The District's pursuit of academic excellence is also recognized on a broader scale, with the number of students acknowledged by the National Merit Scholarship Program increasing by 63% since 2017. Rockwall ISD's high schools have consistently ranked among the top schools on the UIL's Lone Star Cup list for academics, fine arts, and athletics since 2017. Most importantly, 97% of all secondary students participate in extracurricular activities such as Fine Arts, Athletics, or Career and Technical Education programs. These achievements are a testament to the comprehensive education fostered in the District.

Community is important to Dr. Villarreal, and he is actively involved with organizations like the Rockwall Area Chamber of Commerce, the Rotary Club, and the Children's Advocacy Center. He also serves in a state leadership role as the Region 10 representative on the Texas Association of School Administrators Executive Committee.
