Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

Advanced Placement (AP) courses offer rigorous, college-level coursework right here in high school. These courses follow strict curricular objectives set by the College Board, and all AP course syllabi are reviewed and approved annually.

Why Take AP Courses?

• GPA Weight: All courses designated as "AP" receive additional weight when calculating grade point averages.

• Guaranteed Texas College Credit: Under Texas law (HB 1992), all Texas public colleges and universities must award college credit to students who earn a score of 3 or higher on an AP Exam.

• National Recognition: Students can earn AP Scholar Awards from the College Board to highlight their achievements on college applications.

What to Expect AP courses require a commitment to a college-level workload, which frequently includes daily reading outside of the school day.

• Spring Exams: All students enrolled in an AP course are expected to take the corresponding College Board AP Exam in May.

• Fees: The College Board charges a fee for each exam; however, fee reductions or waivers are available for qualified students.

The AP Capstone Diploma™ Program

Rockwall ISD offers the prestigious AP Capstone Diploma program, a two-year track focused on advanced research and inquiry.

• Requirements: Students take AP Seminar and AP Research, earning a score of 3 or higher on both exams, plus a score of 3 or higher on four additional AP exams of their choice.

• College Edge: This outstanding accomplishment is explicitly noted on the AP score reports sent to universities.
