State Champion Highlights
Jake Moon, the standout wrestler from Rockwall High School, has etched his name in the annals of Texas wrestling history by clinching the championship title in the 2024 UIL Boys State Championship in the 6A 150lb division. With an impressive record of 38 wins and just 4 losses, Jake showcased his extraordinary talent and determination throughout the tournament held from February 16-17, 2024.
In the championship round, Jake dominated his opponents with a combination of skill, strategy, and sheer athleticism. He began the tournament with a remarkable tech fall victory over Graham Kilpper from Lewisville Flower Mound, winning 21-6 in just under five minutes. As he progressed to the quarterfinals, Jake continued to impress, securing a decisive 5-2 victory against Trystan Blenis from Hutto. In the semifinals, he faced Robbie Rocha of Arlington Martin, demonstrating his relentless drive and tactical prowess with a solid 9-3 decision.
The final match was a true testament to Jake's character and skill as he faced Will Deutschlander from Austin Lake Travis. With nerves of steel and unwavering focus, Jake won decisively with an 8-2 decision, sealing his place as the state champion. This victory not only crowned him as the top wrestler in his division but also highlighted his previous successes at the district and regional levels.
In the spring of 2024, the Rockwall High School Men's Gymnastics team showcased their dominance by winning their fourth consecutive state title at the Texas High School Gymnastics Association Championships held in El Paso. Led by standout performer Trey Lopez, who finished second in the all-around competition, the Yellowjackets scored a total of 340.65 points, triumphing over Saginaw and Round Rock, which finished with 334.90 and 333.90 points, respectively.
“It was a roller coaster ride of ups and downs, but our team remained resilient and finished the job,” said Rockwall coach Cameron Sweny. The team's hard work paid off, as they scored 177.20 in the compulsory competition and 163.45 in the optional events, solidifying their place at the top.
Lopez delivered an exceptional performance, earning first place on the parallel bars with a score of 19.65. He also secured second place in the rings (19.30) and horizontal bar (19.10), while tying for fourth in the floor exercise with a score of 18.70. His total of 113.60 points in the all-around was just shy of the winner, Diego Ciacci of Round Rock, who scored 114.45.
Joshua Smelser also shone for Rockwall, finishing fifth in the all-around with 111.50 points, while taking second in the pommel horse (19.45). The success extended to the girls' team as well, with Haylee Finley finishing fifth in the all-around, helping the Lady Jackets secure second place overall.
Rockwall's extraordinary achievement not only highlighted the skill and dedication of its athletes but also reinforced their legacy as one of the premier gymnastics programs in Texas.
