Culinary Arts Students Place Top 10 at National ProStart Contest

Students from the Dr. Gene Burton College and Career Academy competed in the National ProStart Invitational Competition in Baltimore, Maryland, last month. Representing the state of Texas and Rockwall ISD, the culinary team earned 8th place among 47 total teams. Each team present at the competition earned first place in its state, further highlighting the accomplishments of earning a spot in the top 10 teams nationally.

To advance to the national level, each culinary team must demonstrate discipline, teamwork, and professionalism. This reflects the students’ leadership, commitment and hard work as they maintain a culture of excellence within Rockwall ISD’s Career and Technical Education programs. 

“Their hard work, resilience, and commitment to their craft truly set them apart,” said Culinary Arts Instructor Chris Rivera. “We could not be prouder of how they carried themselves and our program.”

Team members included seniors Kevie W., Meagan H., and Jacob M., alongside juniors Kailey H. and Darby J. All seniors graduating from the program have committed to attending a Culinary Arts program with the intent to receive a degree in Culinary Arts.

Supporting these students, instructors Chef Bristow, Chef Hernandez, Chef Meyer, and Chef Rivera demonstrated excellence in leading the team with unity, strength, and resilience. Their hard work in supporting our students reflects Rockwall ISD’s values of leadership, innovation, and excellence.

The team was recognized at the May 18th, 2026, school board meeting. Each student received a Trustee Award for their accomplishments.
