Fashion Design Students Earn Top Spots in National Competition
The 2023-2024 FCCLA Fashion Design students from the Dr. Gene Burton College and Career Academy placed in the Top 10 in the nation at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference held in Seattle, Washington.
Congratulations to Raleigh M. who earned gold and placed #1 in the nation in Fashion Design Level 2; Gracie Z. who placed #2 in the nation in Fashion Design Level 3; and Sophia B. who placed #2 in the nation in Fashion Construction Level 2. The students proudly represented the state of Texas and Rockwall ISD while competing against more than 50 students across the nation in their respective categories.
“This fabulous trio is no doubt one of the most exceptional and talented National competition teams that I have ever known and coached,” said Renee Aube, Fashion Design instructor at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy. “They work extremely hard all year long during our competition season and their results are always outstanding.”
Students start out by drafting and designing their own custom-designed garment for competition. Students also prepare a 40-page Fashion Design portfolio, 15-minute oral presentation, and an inspiration theme-based presentation board.
FCCLA members develop skills for life through character development, creative and critical thinking, interpersonal communication, soft skills, practical knowledge, public speaking, team management, networking, and career preparation. Gracie Z. was awarded over $75,000 in scholarships last year, and will be attending SCAD in Savannah, Georgia this fall. Raleigh and Sophia will be returning for the 2024-2025 FCCLA competition team.
