Hays Students Booked Their Victory at Battle of the Books

Hays Students Booked Their Victory at Battle of the Books
Luci Mouton

Celia Hays Elementary fourth and fifth graders came out on top at the annual Rockwall ISD Battle of the Books tournament on March 13.

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read great books and have fun competing with peers. Each year, elementary students in grades 4 and 5 compete in teams at all 16 campuses. The winning team represents their school at the district-wide event. Elementary Library Media Specialists facilitate by putting together a team, providing the required reading, and supporting the students as they prepare for the battle.

Students are given a list of books to read over a given period of time and must answer questions about each book by a referee. Each team selects a caption, and students divide up the reading.

The competition requires extensive preparation and strong comprehension skills. Congratulations to all students for their hard work!
