Coding Week in the Rock Nine Library
Jessica Applegate
In the Spring, Rock Nine Instructional Technology Coach, Mrs. Hampton, and Librarian, Mrs. Applegate, participated in a course offered through the University of Texas at Austin. They learned about Microbits, how to use them, and ways to teach the devices to elementary and secondary students. Upon completion of the course, 10 Microbits were given to Hampton and Applegate via the educational grant from UT. In an effort to incorporate the lessons learned, Hampton and Applegate invited Rock Nine students to the library for National Coding Week September 15-19. Mrs. Cavin's Principles of Education classes visited the library to explore Microbits and ways to differentiate instruction with their future students. During the lesson, students connected their Microbits to Chromebooks and learned how to code different functions. Students completed five different stations where they coded their Microbit to have a heartbeat animation, a scrolling name tag, a smiley face using a button press, a digital dice, and a LED compass. Coding activities were available before school and during both lunches all week in the Rock Nine Library.
