Rock Nine Students Celebrate Greek Culture from The Odyssey

Rock Nine Students Celebrate Greek Culture from The Odyssey
Jessica Applegate

At the conclusion of their Odyssey unit in Honors English classes at Rock Nine, students participated in a culminating project centered on xenia, the Greek concept of hospitality. Classrooms were transformed into feast settings, complete with table arrangements and shared food, reflecting the cultural practices described in the epic. Teachers extended the activity by guiding students in analyzing how food functions in literature, connecting meals to themes of hospitality, social norms, and power. Through discussion and shared experience, students explored how expectations of hosts and guests shape both ancient Greek culture and the narrative of The Odyssey.
