The Crayon Initiative

This year, Mrs. Stephanie Lawhorn, UMS art teacher, and the staff and students at Utley Middle School are supporting a non-profit organization called ‘The Crayon Initiative’ which takes crayons that would otherwise be thrown away and donates them to be recycled and turned into new crayons. These new crayons are then donated to children’s hospitals all over the US.

Mrs. Lawhorn first became interested in this program after her son was in the hospital and she saw what a need there was for crayons that young children could use. She then went home and started doing some research and found the Crayon Initiative.

"This foundation touches every part of me," stated Mrs. Lawhorn." I have a science and an art background. The crayons are reshaped into a triangle shape for little hands to hold easier, and of course I love the art that is created. And lastily, it just tugged on my mother's heart to be able to help children in hospitals everywhere."

If you would like to donate your used crayons, please send them to Utley Middle School. We will take anything you have to offer!
