TeenTober in the Library

teentober The Utley Middle School Library is celebrating TeenTober! The American Library Association encourages libraries across the United States to participate in this event, which is “a nationwide celebration hosted by libraries every October and aims to celebrate teens, promote year-round teen services and the innovative ways teen services helps teens learn new skills, and fuel their passions in and outside the library.”

Every Friday in October, students eat their lunch in the library while participating in engaging activities and learning more about what the library offers. Students looked at origami resources in the first week while Ms. Loya, the UMS Librarian, led them through various origami activities. “I loved the origami session,” a student mentioned, “I even gave my bat to my teacher, and she hung it up! I made more when I got home.”

During the second week, Ms. Ross, the UMS ITS, showed students how to utilize Google Draw to create Shapegrams, detailed pictures using only shapes. Other activities include tangram puzzles, board games, and coding.

“It’s been a great way to meet new students in the library and help them discover their interests. The enthusiasm has been enjoyable to see, and I can’t wait to do it again next year!” Ms. Loya said of the event. “The administrators have been really supportive of this event, which has made everything run smoothly!”
