The Jones Elementary Student Council, led by Ms. Rivera the Jones Counselor, recently facilitated a community service-learning program that called “The Hero Squad”. This initiative supports the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS).

This community service program includes three weeks of fundraising with the money benefitting the LLS. The Hero Squad initiative incorporates learning with service, and lessons incorporated STEM lessons that provided “students and faculty an in-depth look at LLS-funded science and the researchers supported by their fundraising efforts”.  The program also includes social and emotional learning aspects, with students learning about the feelings of children who might be affected by cancer.

Student council members helped advertise the event, created videos for students and teachers to watch, did live announcements in the mornings, helped with the curriculum, and counted the donations as they came in throughout the three weeks. It was a wonderful and eye opening event for the students at Jones as well as a good, hands-on learning opportunity for the student council members. Each of these members was able to understand what it takes to successfully plan an event and support a good cause.

Jones raised almost two thousand dollars for LLS, with one student bringing his piggybank to donate because he wanted to help other children who needed it.
