Second Grade Poetry Jam

poetry

The second graders at Jones Elementary finished up their poetry unit with a poetry jam! Each student worked on original poems paired with illustrations. After completing their final drafts, students practiced performing their work and when on the day of the poetry jam, they were ready. Students performed one by one, focusing on the verbal rhythm and breaks in the poems. When each performance ended, the audience thoroughly enjoyed snapping their approval and encouragement.

Poem topics ranged based on student interest. One student wrote a poem wondering about what it was like one hundred years ago, another wrote about how it felt to have a woman vice president, and one of the most memorable was about a student, a wet book, and a mad librarian. The student who penned the book poem originally wrote it in Spanish, but it was so popular, he translated it to English and the poem was presented by the teachers to each class.

“It was amazing to see the students perform. They really tried hard and I loved seeing a different side of them,” Ms. Saenz said. Ms. Carlton added, “The students had so much fun while learning and we all enjoyed the performances.”
