Life Cycles at Jones

life cycle

The second and third grade classrooms at Jones Elementary currently hold exciting visitors for the students – animals!  The students are presently learning about animal life cycles and are observing the processes in real time.

In second grade, each classroom, including the remote classroom, received a kit with caterpillars that will turn into butterflies within the month. Students have witnessed the caterpillars build their chrysalises and are counting down the days until butterflies emerge. Chavi, from Ms. Saenz's class, said, "It takes about twelve days. Look at the board; that's our countdown. In about eight days we'll see it become a butterfly!" In Ms. Megee's room, Lily made sure everyone was cautious around the netting, "We have to make sure not to touch or move the cage. The chrysalis could fall off the top. I can't wait to see it!"

In third grade, students are witnessing the life cycle of frogs. Each classroom contains a tank with water and plants. The kids excitedly explained that they currently have tadpoles. Andrew, from Ms. Paredes's class, said, "Their tadpoles now, but they're going to be froglets next." Andrea nodded, "And then they'll be frogs. Look, they're so cute!"

We love the first-hand experience and knowledge that the students are gaining through this unit!
