Audrey Smith, Team 1296 Full Metal Jackets, Wins Dean’s List Award at First Robotics World Competition

Houston, TX – Rockwall High School/Team 1296 Full Metal Jackets student Audrey Smith has been recognized with the Dean’s List Award at the First Robotics World Competition, held from April 18-22 in Houston, TX. Smith was one of only ten students selected from among the thousands of nominees at the competition.

The Dean’s List Award is presented to students who demonstrate exceptional leadership, technical expertise, and a commitment to promoting robotics as a way to inspire more young people to become involved in the field. Smith was nominated for the award by her team mentors and peers, who noted her outstanding contributions to the team throughout the year. Winners of the Dean’s List Award are invited to attend an all expenses paid trip to a leadership summit held by FIRST this summer.

“Audrey has been an integral part of our team from the beginning,” said Melissa Bunch, Coach of the Full Metal Jacket Robotics Team. “She has shown a natural talent for programming and has been instrumental in helping us design and build our robot. But more than that, she has inspired her teammates with her enthusiasm and dedication to the sport of robotics. We are so proud of her for winning this award.”

Smith was one of only a handful of students from Rockwall, TX to compete in the First Robotics World Competition, which brought together teams from all over the world to showcase their skills and compete for top honors. The event was held at the George R Brown Convention Center and drew thousands of visitors over the course of the four-day competition.

“I’m so honored to have been chosen for this award,” said Smith. “I’ve loved being part of the robotics team and I’m grateful for all the support I’ve received from my mentors and teammates. This competition was an amazing experience and I’m proud to have represented Rockwall High School/Team 1296 on the world stage.”

Smith plans to continue her involvement in robotics and hopes to inspire other young people to get involved in the field. She plans to pursue a degree in engineering at West Point when she graduates from RHS. Audrey is the daughter of David and Amy Smith of Rockwall.
