2019-2020 School Calendar - Survey - Web Slideshow-01

We know that the school calendar impacts our families and community, so we want to hear from you. We invite you to take a look at the draft 2019-2020 school calendar below and let us know what you think. This comment opportunity will be available through Friday, January 11, 2019.

CALENDAR HIGHLIGHTS:

  • Students will begin classes on Monday, August 19, 2019.
  • The school year will end Thursday, May 28, 2020.
  • All grade levels are now on four, 9-week grading periods.
  • Elementary half days for the first and third quarters have been removed to allow for an October 14th (Columbus Day) all-district professional development day.

In 2017, the Board of Trustees approved the recommendation by the Professional Learning Executive Committee (PLEC) to become a District of Innovation. One of the exemptions presented by the committee allowed for the flexibility of a start date before the fourth Monday in August, as currently required in the Texas Education Code.  This flexibility allows the district to determine locally, on an annual basis, what best meets the needs of the students, parents, and our local community. An earlier start in August will enable the district to develop a calendar that best meets the needs of the students in RISD. Because the community expects the fall semester to end with final exams before the Winter Break, the restricted start date creates a significant imbalance in the number of instructional days in each semester. This year's draft calendar utilizes the exemption approved by the Board of Trustees and proposes the same start date as last year’s calendar.

IMPORTANT CONSIDERATIONS FOR CALENDAR:

  • 75,600 instructional minutes/year as required by law
  • Fulfilling teacher contract days as well as teacher work days
  • Bad weather, federal holidays, and state & local testing days
