At its virtual annual conference in February, Texas Association of School Business Officials (TASBO) awarded 10 districts with the Award of Excellence in Financial Management, including Rockwall ISD. This new program recognizes Texas school districts that have implemented professional standards, best practices and innovations in financial reporting.
“It’s a rigorous program,” said Tracy Ginsburg, TASBO Executive Director. “In Texas, there are high expectations for public education to properly manage finances and report them transparently. This new awards program reflects efforts to adopt best practices and go above and beyond minimum standards.”
A TASBO Accounting Subcommittee developed the criteria for the award based on state and federal guidelines. Each applicant must submit documentation on 11 areas:
- finance department essentials
- staffing & training
- controls
- budget management
- processes
- cash management
- communications
- financial reports
- financial analyses and projections
- external staff training
- innovation (bonus points)
