Elementary Student Councils Gain Valuable Leadership Skills

Student Council from Lyon Elementary

More than 80 student council students from 14 elementary schools participated in a leadership workshop Tuesday, Sept. 27 to learn how to be effective leaders.

The Texas Elementary School Principals and Supervisors (TEPSA) Leaders 'R' Us Workshop was sponsored by Rockwall ISD's Elementary Curriculum and Instruction and Dorris Jones Elementary. TEPSA has trained more than 36,000 Texas students to be successful leaders on their campuses since 1999, according to their website.

During the one-day workshop, student leaders in grades 4-6 learned the benefits of creating an effective student leadership team. They also learned how to develop leadership skills to guide their teams and campuses, such as finding ways to create meaningful projects and fundraisers.

School advisors also had their own workshop sessions that will help organize their student councils and set them and their leaders up for success.

Thank you to Dr. Mary Johnston, Dr. Mary Pugh, Teresa Twedell and Katie Braden for organizing this for our elementary schools and bringing this opportunity to our district. Additional thanks to the Student Council sponsors who dedicated time to learn with their students. We look forward to seeing these leaders in action across our district!
