For the 2018 school year, the Rockwall-Heath High School Counseling Department kicked off Unwind Wednesdays for students and staff.

Unwind Wednesdays are an opportunity for students and staff to practice self-care by learning mindfulness techniques. Student participation in Unwind Wednesdays has increased every week, and after being led through breathing exercises and relaxation strategies, students head back to class with techniques they can use when they’re feeling anxious or overwhelmed.

Feedback from parents and students has been overwhelmingly positive.

“Parents are grateful that their students have a place to go for a quick “reboot” and students say that they are so grateful they have a place to go,” said Kristin Marceau, associate principal at RHHS. “Students begin to relax the moment they enter the Calm Room and emerge re-energized and ready to return to class.”

In addition to Unwind Wednesdays, the Counseling Department has created a Calm Room where students can go any time of day to reduce stress and anxiety, steady their emotions and refocus. The room is dimly lit, with a soothing waterfall and comfortable seating. Students can squeeze a stress ball, color, play with kinetic sand or just sit quietly.

The 30-minute staff sessions begin at 7:30 a.m. and the student sessions begin at 8 a.m.
