Top Accolades of the 2021-2022 School Year from Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy

District CTE News - May 2022

   

As the school year comes to a close, we wanted to recognize our students for a job well done as they have competed and championed important events and milestones this year at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy.

Did you know that approximately 3,000 students attend the Burton Academy? Did you know that this school offers twelve career clusters, multiple programs of study and 42 different professional certifications? Approximately 442 seniors will receive cords symbolizing the 450 professional certifications earned. A few examples of the certifications achieved by our students include Certified Medical Assistant, EKG Technician, Floral certification and Non-Commissioned Security Officer certification.

In addition to professional certifications, many students are also state, national and even international winners of CTE competitions in everything from law, robotics, FFA, culinary arts, architecture, fashion, marketing, merchandising, business, EMT, sports nutrition, teaching and the BBQ team!

Valeria Diaz Scott Wins TAFE State Competition

The 2021-2022 Texas Association of Future Educators (TAFE) competition team, which consisted of 3 state qualifiers, attended the TAFE Teach Tomorrow Summit, led by their teacher and coach Mrs. Robin Peterson. Valeria Diaz Scott won at TAFE state and qualified for the Educators Rising National Conference in June in Washington D.C

Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy DECA Students Earn International Awards, Representing Texas and Rockwall ISD

Nine Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy DECA students recently competed among 14,000 from 15 different countries at the DECA International Competition (ICDC) in Atlanta.

Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy BPA Students Bring Home Awards from National Leadership Conference

The 2021-2022 Business Professionals of America (BPA) competition team, which consisted of 15 state qualifiers, attended the BPA State Leadership Conference, led by their teachers and coaches Mrs. Misty Rayson, Mrs. Naposhi Amos, and Mr. Jeff Burkham. Five of these students won at BPA state, and an additional three advanced at the BPA virtual competition. These eight students represented Rockwall ISD at the BPA National Leadership Conference in Dallas. At the National Conference, The Network Design Team won 1st place, Virtual Branding won 2nd place and Best in Show, and Digital Media production placed 4th!

205 Pitmasters BBQ Club Competes at the State BBQ Championships

The Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy 205 Pitmasters BBQ Club recently competed at the State High School BBQ Championships. Team Smoke and Team Fire competed against 83 other schools from across the state of Texas. 85 teams competed in dessert, beans, chicken, ribs and brisket, and 425 entries were judged. Team Fire ended the day finishing 4th overall with a 27th place in chicken, 21st place in beans, 6th place in ribs and a 1st place finish in brisket. Team Smoke had a great showing as well finishing 19th in beans and 14th in brisket.

Law Club Students Win Big at State Competition

Law Club members at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy recently competed at the TX Public Safety Teachers Association State competition where they earned five state championships, five second place finishes and one third place finish.

Architectural Design Students Bring Home Awards from State Competition

The SkillsUSA 2022 Architectural Design competition team from the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy recently competed in the 2022 SkillsUSA State Competition. All eight students received the highest award which is a “Superior Blue Ribbon Rating” for their portfolios, models and architectural drafting designed and constructed for this competition.

GBCCA Accounting compete and place at district UIL

Accounting students at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy recently competed at district UIL. Jillian Gibralter, Adan Parker, Shreeja Gurawale and Amy Tolliver captured 2nd place as a team, earning thema wild-card spot at Regionals. In addition, individual awards were earned by Jillian Gibralter (6th) and Adan Parker (5th).

Rockwall ISD Fashion Design Students Are National Qualifiers

Fashion Design students from the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy recently competed at the FCCLA State 2022 Fashion Design competition where eight out of 11 placed in the top five of four different categories consisting of Fashion Design and Fashion Construction. Five out of the eight students placed in the top 2 in the state of Texas, and will be advancing as National qualifiers at the FCCLA National Leadership Conference in San Diego, California.

Fashion Design Students Win Big at SKILLS USA State Competition

The 2022 SKILLS USA 2022 Fashion Design competition team recently competed in the 2022 SKILLS USA State Fashion Design Competition. All eight students received the highest award which is a “Superior Blue Ribbon Rating” for their portfolio and garment they designed and constructed for this competition.

Rockwall HS Robotics Team Qualifies for World Championship

The Rockwall HS robotics team, Team 1296 - Full Metal Jackets, recently competed at State where they won the Chairman's Award. The Chairman’s Award is the most prestigious award at FIRST, it honors the team that best represents a model for other teams to emulate and best embodies the mission of FIRST. It was created to keep the central focus of FIRST Robotics Competition on the ultimate goal of transforming the culture in ways that will inspire greater levels of respect and honor for science and technology, as well as encouraging more of today’s youth to become science and technology leaders. The State of Texas had 164 teams participate this year, 80 of these teams attended the State level competition. As a result of their success in Chairman's, they will be one of 23 teams representing Texas at the FRC World's Competition.

HOSA Students Bring Home Awards from State Competition

HOSA students from the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy recently competed at the Texas State HOSA Competition where they brought home several awards.

Rockwall-Heath HS Robotics Team Competes at World Championships

The Black Hawk Robotics Team recently competed at the World Championships ranked 5th in the state of Texas and finished as the Mercury Division finalist. The team also won the Creativity Award.

Students Earn EKG Certification Through Local Internships

Through a newly developed partnership with 15 local medical clinics, nursing students at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy earned their EKG certification during the 2021-2022 school year. Students had the opportunity to intern at more than 15 local clinics. Thank you to the participating clinics.

FFA Students Advance to Area Competition
