Student Discourse

Utley Middle School is focusing on student discourse to get students talking and learning at the same time!

The benefit of students learning through discourse is that they are sharing their thinking with each other and seeing how their friends approach problems and learning. Students learn from their own mistakes through discourse by talking with their peers.
Some examples of lessons that include discourse are the following:

Learning loops - students have partners that form questions and give feedback.
Snowball Technique - students discuss and try to gather more groups along the way.
Gallery Walk - students are up, exploring and discussing different topics.
Instructional Conversations - students mark down each time their partner uses academic vocabulary or key points during a discussion.

We love seeing students up and about, sharing their learning with others!
