Better Together Counselor Activity

Recently, Utley counselors Mrs. Rivera and Mrs. Sarten led a lunchtime “Better Together” activity for students focused on self-control and learning what we can and cannot control in our lives.

The activity began with the counselors explaining the concepts of self-control and circles of control. They explained that self-control is the ability to manage our thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. Our circle of control is the things that we can control, such as our own thoughts, feelings, and actions. The things that we cannot control, such as the weather, the actions of others, and events that happen to us, are outside of our circle of control.

After explaining the concepts, the counselors led students in a series of hands-on activities to help them learn more about self-control.

In one activity, students were given a coloring sheet and asked to write what is within their control in their lives. They then reflected on what is out of their control.

In another activity, students were given different colored balloons and asked to keep a particular color in the air for as long as possible without letting it touch the ground. This activity was designed to teach students to focus on what they can control (the particular colored balloon) and let other things go (the other colored balloons).

The counselors also led students in a discussion about various situations in their lives. Students shared their thoughts and ideas, and the counselors helped them to identify the things that they can control and the things that they cannot control. The lunchtime activity was a success, with students reporting that they learned a lot! The counselors were pleased with the students' participation and engagement in the activity.

In addition to the benefits mentioned above, the lunchtime activity also provided students with an opportunity to socialize with each other and build relationships with the counselors. The activity was a fun and educational way for students to learn about important life skills.

The Utley counselors are committed to helping students develop the skills they need to be successful in school and in life. They are planning a variety of programs throughout this year to help students learn about teamwork, communication, and other important life skills.
