Battle of the Books Competition

Amy Parks Shines at the District Battle of the Books Competition

Our 3rd & 4th grade team won second place and our 5th & 6th grade team took home the district championship!

Battle of the Books is a reading incentive program designed to encourage students to read great books and have fun competing with peers. Each year, elementary students in grades 3-6 compete in teams at all 16 campuses; the winning team represents their school at the district-wide event. Elementary Library Media Specialists facilitate by putting together a team, providing the required reading and supporting the students as they prepare for the battle.

Students are given a list of books to read over a given period of time and must answer questions about each book by a referee. Each team selects a caption and students are encouraged to read as many of the books as possible.

The competition requires lots of preparation, comprehension and test-taking skills.  Students also learn to recognize and work with other students in a mentally challenging, competitive sport.
