Welcome to Fine Arts (Visual Arts)

  • Here in the Rockwall High School Visual Art Department, we aim to foster a well-rounded artistic education that spans various media and perspectives. Through drawing, ceramics, painting, and sculpture classes, we develop strong foundational skills, encouraging creative expression and experimentation while maintaining a rigorous and supportive learning environment for all our students.

We will be covering these core objectives below:

    • Develop foundational skills in drawing, painting, ceramics, and sculpture.
    • Focus on techniques such as shading, perspective, composition, color theory, and various material handling methods, while encouraging experimentation and exploration of different artistic styles and approaches.
    • Nurture individual creativity and encourage students to express their unique ideas and perspectives through their artwork in order to provide opportunities for students to engage in self-directed projects that reflect their interests and personal narratives.
    • Develop an understanding of how art has evolved over time and its connections to societal, political, and technological changes as we introduce students to the history of art; including major art movements, influential artists, and cultural contexts.
    • Teach students how to analyze and critique artwork, fostering the ability to identify artistic elements, intentions, and messages and foster discussions that explore the meaning and impact of artworks within cultural and historical contexts.
    • Offer specialized classes in drawing, ceramics, painting, and sculpture to provide students with advanced skills and techniques in their chosen medium.
    • Incorporate lessons that highlight art from different cultures and perspectives, promoting cross-cultural understanding and inclusivity.
    • Provide opportunities for students to publicly exhibit their artwork within the school and the community.

Offer guidance on applying to art schools, creating portfolios for college applications, and pursuing further education in the arts.

    • For AP Studio Art students, guide them in building a portfolio that showcases their artistic growth, versatility, and mastery across various media while we provide regular critiques and feedback to help students refine their portfolio pieces, aligned with the goals set out by the College Board.
    • For our AP Art History students, we will cover a wide range of art styles, cultures, and time periods, fostering an appreciation for diverse artistic traditions and facilitating students’ ability to write critically about the history and culture of artmaking throughout history, aligned with the goals set out by the College Board.

By addressing these core objectives in drawing, ceramics, painting, sculpture, AP Art History, and AP Studio Art classes, our Rockwall High school Visual art program can provide students with a comprehensive and enriching artistic education that prepares them for both artistic pursuits and a broader understanding of the world of art. Please reach out at any time, as your child's growth and development are extremely important to us.

    Relationships. Innovation. Excellence.
