Fostering a culture of civility in Rockwall ISD schools, as well as throughout the district and community, was the discussion at today’s Better Together High School Summit at the Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy. More than 80 student leaders representing Rockwall Heath-High School, Rockwall High School, and Dr. Gene Burton College & Career Academy met with the district’s Student Services Department, under the leadership of Dr. Tom Maglisceau, to create a vision and plan to promote civility throughout the community.

Avery McCrillis, an RHS senior, said, “Better Together is about bringing in all the community and grade levels from kinder through 12th grade, working together to fulfill kindness. We talked about having high school students going to elementary schools and middle schools spreading the word of what Better Together means.”

The leaders identified outreach opportunities for students, including elementary and middle schools, and prioritized strategies for the spring semester with a continuation of projects next fall. “From the beginning, our goal was always for students to lead this community-wide commitment for civility. Today was an affirmation of the quality of student leadership in Rockwall ISD, and I know the work today will make a significant impact in our community—next semester, next year, and into the future,” said Dr. Tom Maglisceau, Chief of Student Services.
