Temporary Parent-Led Virtual Option Asynchronous Plan for Learning

  • Rockwall ISD will no longer be offering the Temporary Parent-Led Virtual option at the conclusion of the first semester. Students that were enrolled in the Temporary Parent-Led Virtual option will transition to in-person learning beginning Wednesday, January 5, 2022.

In the interest of supporting families that awaited the release of a vaccine for ages 5-11, Rockwall ISD provided a temporary optional parent-led program that would allow families of elementary-aged students to learn from home for the first semester of the 2021-2022 school year. The number of families in Rockwall ISD that desired this option was very low and, as a result, the district designed a parent-led virtual option where parents would facilitate their child’s learning.

The district designed the Temporary Parent-Led Virtual Option for K-6th Grade families with the drafted requirements of Senate Bill 15 in mind. The resources provided coupled with an asynchronous structure allowed parents to keep their children home but guide their learning in a manner similar to their in-person peers. As a result, the structure of this virtual option, allows for funding to be collected for many of the students that participated in the parent-led virtual option for Term 1. After the passage of Senate Bill 15 and additional guidance from the Texas Education Agency, Rockwall ISD modified the requirements of the parent-led virtual option to precisely meet the expectations for funding.

Students are expected to engage in the scheduled content asynchronously for a minimum of 240 minutes per day. The student schedule is determined by an estimated time duration per subject as opposed to designated time blocks of instruction. During the day, students will have access to all activities and complete self-paced assignments independently and in the order in which they prefer. Parents will provide instruction from scripted lessons to support video based instructional components. Teachers can track student login time and assignment completions via online digital resource platforms, and they can tailor pacing and content for students based on their individual progress and/or areas where students may require additional practice or support. Daily, on-demand support is available through the Virtual Learning Support Team. Parents will monitor student progress with auto graded assignments and direct observations with the guidance of the Virtual Learning Support Team. Parents will collect student work samples to generate a portfolio representing the student progress in writing.

Eligibility for daily attendance funding: This was determined in the district by examining three factors for each child that selected the Temporary Parent-Led Virtual Option.

    • Was the student a virtual learner in the 2020-2021 for the majority of the school year?
    • Did the student maintain 90% or greater attendance in the 2020-2021 school year?
    • Did the student meet academic grade level expectations as determined by:
      1. Passage of all attempted STAAR assessments (4th-6th grades)?
        1. If the student did not attempt the STAAR assessments, the district utilized end of year MAP data to determine grade level proficiency in both reading and math.
      2. Acceptable progress and proficiency on both math and reading screeners at the end of the school year(1st-3rd)?
      3. Acceptable progress towards mastery on a student’s Individualized Education Plan (IEP) goals?
    • A daily tracking chart of attendance engagement for each term was maintained for each student. The course manager communicated with both the parents and the home campus when students were not engaged in learning.

Instructional Materials and Resources provided for Virtual Families
Rockwall ISD provided a blend of instructional resources to provide instruction and learning activities in all four core content areas. Digital platforms collected progress monitoring data in both reading and math for all grade levels.
